Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)
Director: Francis Ford Coppola
Ok. Guys. This one is a bit tough. The thing is, you should watch it. It has some incredible cinematography and some knockout performances (Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins are particularly important). Oh, and the costumes look like a cross between the English National Opera’s old wardrobe and the inspiration for a Kanye West video. It also has Keanu Reeves in it. I won’t lie to you. And he is not the only fly in the ointment. Some of it is just absolutely laughable. BUT that doesn’t stop it being enjoyable. The sumptuous look of the thing is delightful (not to mention apt) and the overblown mental moments are fun rather than totally stupid.
So if your in the mood for something which is creepy, unintentionally hilarious, beautiful, bizarre, and has Gary Oldman playing Dracula (and I cannot imagine a person who has never been in the mood for such a thing) then check it out. It may not always give the kind of experience Coppola originally intended, but it is pure entertainment nonetheless.
